Presumably he was Silas' younger brother. In 1790, William SHEPHERD of Mere married Mary MATTHEWS, widow, at Stourton. Could there be a connection?

A Silas MATTHEWS son of Edward and Mary was baptised in Gillingham on 9 Nov 1783. A bit late for our chap. But there was a Charles baptised at Trowbridge, son of Edward and Mary, on 21 Feb 1783. A late baptism for Silas? Baptised twice? Once as SHEPHERD and once as MATTHEWS?
